Title: In between
Medium: Artist in the city
Exhibition text:
I wanted to capture the two sides of me, my two cultures. One side is my Mexican side and the other one is my American side. Because even though I was born and raised here in Milwaukee my blood is still Mexican. But I lean more towards my Mexican side.

Artist inspiration:
I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's painting called "self portrait 1932". Because just like her I have two cultures that identify me. I´m in the middle of the both because a little bit of each one is what identifies me as a person. If you mix both of those cultures you get me. I´m in the middle just like Frida is in her painting.

Process:
Since the beginning I knew I wanted to do something inspired on Frida Kahlo because she always mixes her culture into her paintings and that's exactly what I wanted to do. First I looked at all her paintings to choose one I wanted to be inspired by and then I found one that told exactly my story, it was Frida Kahlo in the middle of her two cultures which were my two cultures too. First I painted some Milwaukee buildings which represented where I was born and raised. For that side I did the most famous buildings to let people know where it is. Then for my other side I did Mexico, I painted a church which is very known there and also to represent my religious side. But since the church isn't a very specific symbol to represent Mexico I painted the Mexican flag on the back to let people know. In the middle painting what I was trying to do was paint myself looking at my Mexican side because that's how I identify myself the best. What I did to show the change was to go from dark blue to light blue in the sky, to show transition.

Reflection:
In general I think I did a good job in letting people know what my meaning was, through my painting. It was clear and I thought it was straight to the point how I wanted it to be like. I wanted to have symbolism but not to let everything for the people to guess what was happening. Something I could of improved on was to not do my face very flat. It was suppose to look realistic but instead it came out looking a little bit fake. That's something I would change next time I do a painting, to create more shadows on my face and to make it 3D.
