Title: Into the future
Size: 61 x 91 cm
Medium: Digital collage
Exhibition text:
I was inspired by Rene Magritte's painting "the false mirror" to do my digital collage. The message behind my photo is the future. My future is blurry because I'm still confused on what I want to do next, what I want to be "when I grow up". I have all these kinds of ideas but at the end they just stay as is. I'm trying to make all these choices that at the end I just end up more confused than how I started. When doing my digital collage I wanted to capture the idea of confusion but i wasn't very sure how to do that. First i thought of the pupal of the eye to be looking away from the camera but then i thought maybe it will be a better idea if i made the eye blurry and kind of make it look sad and disappointed. Then I immediately thought of flowers in the middle of my pupal to show how I want my future to look like at the end of the day. Beautiful, and blossoming, full of life, growing by the day more and more. Just how I expect my future to be like. So then i cropped out a flower from the picture on the left that i took outside. I then made my whole picture black and white to make a more dramatic look "into the future" look.
False mirror by Rene Magritte
Meaning behind my piece:
I have always had concerns about the future, what holds, how is going to look like, I'm always worried about it. So through this project I wanted to show my biggest concern in life. I thought that the only way I can show that was through my digital collage. The message I am trying to get through, is the future. In other words what I want my future to look like. I see my future as a flower, as a flower that is blossoming, looking beautiful like I want my future to look like. Having a lot of layers of petals some bigger than the others to show the steps and obstacles that I’m going to face in life. My future might not be so pretty after all but what I want to show with this flower is that at the end everything is going to add up and look how I have always expected to look like.
But then I made it black and white to show confusion, to show that I’m not so sure about some things, still have a lot of questions about what I want to do on my next step of life. I know I want to be successful in life but I still don’t know what I want to be successful by. I’m still not so sure about my long term goals, yes I do have a lot of short term goals but then I don’t know what they are going to add up to at the end. I see everyone so sure about their future and that makes me think that I'm falling behind. I have a lot of questions when it comes to my future, when I say a lot it means a lot. Which one has more benefits? What do I need to do that? all kinds of question which I still don’t have the answer to. I think I have more questions about what career I want to take than anything else. Yes I do have more question about different things but in my point of view more about that than anything else. I think that’s what determines how my future is going to look like. If I’m going to be happy or not. Depending on what I choose as my career is how my life is going to be. That’s why I have to choose very carefully, because if I at the end don’t like what I’m doing as the job I chose it’s going to be very hard for me to do something everyday I don’t like doing. I want to choose something that I love so hard that it’s not going to feel like I’m going to work everyday, because I love doing what I’m doing. So, I do have a long term goal after all, which will be to have a career that I enjoy doing everyday.
I also want to change the way I look at stuff, I don’t just want to see in a negative way. I want to have a new perspective on life, not just the same old way. I want to have new bias, in other words not only do I want to see differently but I also want to think differently. The best way to improve in yourself is by experimenting need things. That’s why I want to try new things in life, things I have never expected to do before. I want to challenge myself, think outside the box for a moment and see what comes out of it. It’s not always good to be consistent.
Process:
First, I had to decide what to inspire my digital collage from. I chose "the false mirror" by Rene Magritte. I decided to make that one because when ever I see that painting I think about the future and that's what I wanted my painting to be based on. Then I had to think how to change it a little bit to not make it exactly the same as Rene's. Since "the false mirror" had a part of the eye changed to another print, I decided to make the same thing but instead of the same part of the eye I decided to change the pupal of the eye to a flower.

Reflection:
Some skills that I developed was that I learned how to work on Photoshop, how to make things look realistic and how to do some things fake. I learned how to make good contrast of color just enough to still look real. I think i made a very good job on the black and white effect. But in my opinion I should of done something that stand out with color, because all the background was black and white. Some other changes I would of done would be to make it more high resolution to see it more clearly and all those smaller details. A creative idea I made was to put a flower in the middle of my pupal to represent the center of my universe. Some challenges i faced during the making of my digital collage was that at first i didn't have a clear idea of what i wanted to do but then i started to think about it and started connect ideas and then i came to the conclusion to make exactly that, that i was confused with a bunch of thoughts. At first it was hard to make that connection with a picture, but then I remembered about the eye that Magritte had painted and it gave me an idea. Something i would of done different will be to make more detailed work.
