Title: Sadness
Size: 22 x 15 cm
Medium: Block Print
Exhibition text:
I love nature, all the different type of shapes and sizes they come in. That's why for this project I decided to make a tree, that captures the idea that I am obsess with nature, and i also made some birds to show around the habitat, how the habitat is. Even though I said I like bright nature colors, my block print looks sad, the tree is all leaded down to show the sadness of it. I wanted to show another look in nature. Most of the time, people when they do paintings about nature it looks happy. But I wanted to show that nature is not all about happiness, it can also be sad, it all depends how you look at it.

Self portrait with torn necklace by Frida Kahlo
Meaning behind the piece:
What I wanted my block print to represent was emotion. I wanted to make a very clear meaning. That when anyone saw it, it won't take long to know what I'm trying to show. I wanted to show sadness. By making the tree that way, when I look at it, it makes me think of a very sad tree that is falling down. Not only does the tree represent something but the birds that are next to the tree represent something else also. The birds represent the same thing as the tree. Which is sadness, and loneliness. They both represent the same thing. I was inspirited by Frida Kahlo because she had a very big passion for nature just like I do. In every painting she corporate some nature things just like I want to do with my piece.

Process:
Doing my dry point, at first it was a little challenging for me, to come out with an idea. Not only an idea but also had to think of a meaning behind it, what it meant to me, what it represented, everything. I decided to make a tree. Then when I had that idea I had to think and plan how I wanted to do it. In the middle or on the side. I decided to make it in the side kinda going down, to demonstrate emotion. I also had to decide the size and shape of it. I also had to put something different than just a tree, I thought birds were a good idea, to capture almost the same idea as I did with the tree which was sadness. The birds were flying away to a "better place". After I had the sketches that I had done from all the ideas I had, I was thinking what part was going to be the black part. I chose to make the background black and the rest of it would take out. And what I make up with at the end was to take out the tree and the birds to make that white so it would stand out that way.

Reflection:
I think I could of done many things different, for example the tree. I could of done it more detailed, with better lines around it. I think it was a bad idea to make the tree leaning down like that, because it doesn't really show what I was trying to say. Something i would of change would be the tree. Have the same idea of emotion but maybe make a whole different thing like something similar to my other sketches. I think I made a better job in my sketches than in my final block print.
